    1. The Goemai language and its speakers Goemai is an Afroasiatic (Chadic, West Chadic A, Angas-Goemai group) language that is spoken in Central Nigeria by around , speakers. The name 'Goemai' [gamai] is used by the speakers themselves to refer to . Arguably, therefore, it is the absence rather than the presence of dependent person markers that is in need of explanation. Active alignment has been shown by Mithun () to be dependent on a variety of semantic parameters such as control, instigation, affect, aspect associated with the .

    The book can thus be seen as a case study in marrying the concerns of linguistic description and formal theory. Of particular concern both for the crosslinguistic survey and the discourse-semantic account was the functional basis for certain prototypical characteristics of switch-reference marking. with some background already in contemporary syntactic, semantic, prag­ matic, and disc ourse theories. For the reader who is unfamiliar with (some of) these theories, I have given additional reference to works that provide an introduction to them. Since I completed this book, a number of new articles and books on anaphora have appeared.
